Word-of-Mouth Marketing

Every local business already understands word of mouth. What almost none of them have internalized is what happened when it became permanent, searchable, and public — because that changes it from a nice-to-have into an asset with a compounding return.

What Is Word-of-Mouth Marketing?

Word-of-mouth marketing is the deliberate encouragement of people to talk about a business to other people. It is the oldest form of promotion there is, and for most of history it had one crippling limitation: it was ephemeral. A recommendation reached whoever was in the room, and then it was gone.

The internet made it permanent, and that's the whole story.

A review is word of mouth that doesn't fade. It's still there in two years, still visible to a stranger, still feeding a rating and a ranking. The same conversation that once reached three people at a barbecue now reaches everyone who searches. That's not a change in degree — it's a change in kind.

Which means it stopped being a byproduct and became infrastructure.

If a recommendation persists and compounds, then generating recommendations is a system worth building, not a happy accident to be grateful for. Most local businesses still treat it as the latter, and it's the single largest gap between what they have and what they use.

Authenticity is a mechanic, not a virtue.

Word of mouth works because the recommender has nothing to gain. Paid, incentivized, or fabricated reviews break the only thing that makes the channel function — and platforms are increasingly good at detecting exactly that. The shortcut destroys the asset.
