Foursquare

Foursquare City Guide shut down on 15 December 2024. The website followed in April 2025. And yet Foursquare has never mattered more to local search — because the part that died was the part you could see, and the part that survived is the part that describes your business to everyone else.

What Was Foursquare — and What Is It Now?

Foursquare City Guide was a local search-and-discovery app launched in 2009 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai. It popularized the check-in, spun its social features into a separate app called Swarm in 2014, pivoted to local search, and was finally sunset in December 2024. Foursquare Labs, the company, is very much alive — as a geospatial data platform.

The consumer app died. The data business didn't.

Foursquare now runs a places database of more than a hundred million points of interest across two hundred–plus countries, exposed through its Places API. That data feeds navigation, delivery, and marketing products built by other companies. The app you could visit is gone. The record it built is embedded everywhere.

Which means your Foursquare venue data is still working — for or against you.

If your business has a Foursquare record with a wrong category, an old address, or a duplicate, that error can propagate into products you have never heard of and cannot name. You can't audit what you don't know consumes it. That is the uncomfortable part.

It is the clearest illustration of a rule worth internalizing.

The directory you can see is not the directory that matters. The visible consumer surface is the tip; underneath it sits a data layer that is licensed, syndicated, and resold. Local SEO that only optimizes what it can look at is optimizing the tip.
